The decomposition rate of phenol in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor in solutions prepared with milliQ and tape water was compared. Interestingly a significant increase was found in tap with respect to milliQ water. [..] The conclusion, confirmed by experiment with phosphate buffer, is that the increase in the decomposition rate of phenol in tap with respect to milliQ water is due to the higher pH of the solution generated by the presence of bicarbonate salts. A method for quantitative determination of the CO2 produced from phenol oxidation and released in the gas phase was also developed.
