In the 19th century, we assist to the biggest consolidating moment of the defensive function of the city, but in the meanwhile to decline of the stronghold. It with the Hapsburgs (1814-1866) Verona becomes the main fortress of the Lombardo-Veneto, after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy its defensive role and its fortifications are misdoubted. Nowadays the system of the war machine still exists in hid physical aspect, even if it has been adsorbed by the city and lost its original function. Even though the system is difficult to be read, the tissue remains. It only needs to be recognized and integrated into the architectural, environmental, cultural milieu that hosts it. It valorization may act as a powerful engine for the city culture, tourism and economic system.
