Applied geophysics provides several methods to investigate contaminated \mbox{areas}. The importance of these methods relies on the possibility of monitoring such areas, in order to apply the most appropriate remediation option. In this work we present the example of the Trecate site, an area contaminated by crude oil caused by the blowout of TR24, an Agip-Eni oil well, in 1994. Several geophysical methods have been used at this site to gain information about the subsurface: one of these methods is bore-hole GPR, an active method based on the reflection of radar pulses at layer boundaries. The GPR surveys in Trecate have been made using both Vertical Radar Profile (VRP) and Zero Offset Profile (ZOP) approaches. Thanks to this comparison between different surveying strategies (VRP vs ZOP and VRP acquisitions in time-lapse mode) , in terms of velocity and water content, several conclusions can be made. First of all the VRP acquisitions are affected by some physical problems linked to the acquisition geometry. To reduce this problem, we tested a mathematical approach that opens new considerations about the VRP acquisition and the evaluation of their results.
