In this Thesis an eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) formulationfor 2D poroelasticity is presented. This research is addressed to investigate if there is a mesh independence fracturepropagation in saturated porous media by means of X-FEM simulations. Attentionwill be focused on the stepwise advancement of a fracture submitted to a mode I crackpropagation. Simulations will be performed by testing similar meshes with differentelement sizes.

Abstract

In this Thesis an eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) formulationfor 2D poroelasticity is presented. This research is addressed to investigate if there is a mesh independence fracturepropagation in saturated porous media by means of X-FEM simulations. Attentionwill be focused on the stepwise advancement of a fracture submitted to a mode I crackpropagation. Simulations will be performed by testing similar meshes with differentelement sizes.
