The aim of this thesis is to optimize the acquisition time and optical configuration of a multipass cell that is to be used in a medical device. The optimal acquisition time is found by simulating different acquisition times of the instrument by means of a code written for this purpose and by minimizing the variance of the dataset. The optimal optical configuration is found by a least-squares polynomial fit on a dataset containing the area of the laser spot (at half maximum) at different optical configurations. The optimal acquisition time is found to be at about 30 seconds, while the optimal optical configuration is found to be when the distance between the collimating lens and the plain mirror SP1 is about 10.8 cm. Some small thermal drifts are found to be present in the dataset and in future they will be accounted for. Future work will involve the development of the multipass cell and its general optimization and validation.
