We study quantum and thermal properties of the Bose-Hubbard model which describes a lattice gas of interacting bosons. By using the formalism of functional integration at one loop (Gaussian level), we determine the equation of state and elementary excitations. In particular, we investigate the Mott-superfluid quantum phase transition showing that the grand canonical potential crucially depends on system parameters.
